A survey I conducted via Opus Research several days ago correctly predicted the big demand (and eventual sellout) for the iPhone 5s. Around the world today shipping dates have been pushed back for all 5s models, but especially the gold color.
The online survey asked 1,508 US adults “Which of the following [handsets] would you like as your next mobile phone?” The randomized choices were:
- Samsung Galaxy
- Other Android phone (Moto X, HTC, LG)
- iPhone 5c
- iPhone 5s
- Windows Phone/Nokia Lumia
- Other mobile phone
The results revealed the 5s to be the most popular “next phone.” This was true across age groups and income categories, except for older Americans (55+) and those making $50K to $75K per year. In that latter case the Samsung Galaxy tied future purchase intent for the iPhone. Otherwise the Galaxy was second across the board.
The 5c was pretty consistently in fourth place regardless of how the responses were sliced or segmented. It was more popular among those 18 to 24 years old and, surprisingly, those between 55 and 64.
