Online Yellow Pages Becomes Organizing Tool for Turkish Protestors

Turkish yellow pages logoAs you probably know an originally peaceful protest against development of an Istanbul city park (Gezi Park) has turned into a national crisis for the right-wing government of Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Secular protesters unhappy with the Erdogan government’s attempt to “Islamify” Turkey are calling for the prime minister to resign. The unrest has spread across the country. It’s an increasingly serious situation and hopefully there won’t be violence (or further violence).

I was told that the protesters are using a combination of Twitter and the the online yellow pages (Yellowpages.com.tr) to organize. Specifically they’re using business profile pages to specify protest locations. Below is a tweet that cites a bank location as a meeting point, referencing the bank’s YP profile page:

Here’s the page that it points to:

The tweet above basically says meet at 12:30 in front of this bank.

Greg – I’m here right now in the middle of it since Monday night. Taskim Square, Istanbul Turkey.  Trying to work and see clients in the midst of this.  While it’s true and compelling that they are using social media and YP data to organise, there is one amazing issue that is keeping the posts and information sharing down to about 30% of what it actually could be. There would be so much more organising and sharing of pictures on the social networks …….BUT ………I watched protester after protester run out of the crappy little batteries we have in our iPhones and Androids.  If they arrived at Taskim square at 6pm, their phones were toast by 8 with the constant use.  Micro-processers have improved 50X over the last 5 years ….but phone batteries have not progressed 2X in the last 10 years.  Get on it manufacturers!!

On the same local note:  This historical event is amazing to experience.  I hope that all the sides realize that the other sides are not all bad …..and that none of the sides is 100% right ……and work towards compromise that continues the healthy progress going forward.  This is an amazing growth market and mobile-business-savvy market that I am happy to be a part of evolving.

Wow. I’m sure it’s quite a scene. How “disrupted” is the day-to-day?
