RetailMeNot Is Bought

The online coupon code site RetailMeNot has been bought. The site was founded almost seven years ago but seemed to come out of total obscurity to become a leading coupon destination, only to later be obscured by Groupon and the daily deals segment.

The buyer is by WhaleShark media. The price wasn’t disclosed.

Formed to roll up coupon sites, WhaleShark owns a slew of them including Deals2Buy, CheapStingyBargains, CouponShare, CouponSeven, Deals.com — and now RetailMeNot. Collectively the company claims “more than 100 million unique visitors for the year.”

RetailMeNot instantly becomes the most valuable property in the portfolio, although the Deals.com URL has tremendous potential. There doesn’t appear to be a daily deals offering among WhaleShark’s holdings. So that’s probably the next acquisition.

Is there something in the water? What’s up with all this end-of-year M&A?

Update: RetailMeNot was reportedly bought for $90M. That’s a nice payday for the site’s two founders.
